Hanley Dennning, also known by the community living and working in the Guatemala City Garbage Dump as “the Angel of the Dump“, was an American Woman who decided to change the lives of many poorest at-risk children living in the vulnerable communities around this area. Five years after you passed away Hanley, your spirit and your vision is still alive, more than ever, through your little baby, Safe Passage.
It seems like yesterday, when you, all the staff and volunteers where running and doing their best in order to be able to get that support, that first donation and even trying to get that kid into the program. It was like a big family, where everyone used to do pretty much everything, without thinking twice. Your sweet smile and voice, and your singular charisma always identified you, and still do. It is hard to believe that you are not physically with us anymore. Families, children and staff remember sometimes some good stories about you, like whenever you visited some classrooms, you always liked the children to play that “Siempre seremos amigos” song with one of the teachers, Elí López; now one of the children that yourself got into the program plays and sings this song by himself, and he is a guitar enthusiast, Rollingstone Pérez, also known as “Junior”, who always, always remembers you.
Abner Cos, a child who was about 6 years old when you knocked at his parent’s house to ask for permission to give him Hope, Education and Opportunities, and today he is a 16-year-old young guy working very hard to finish school and support his family. Junior and Abner are just a few testimonials of the real change that you started to do in so many people. This reality, and the strength which these people fight every day to be able to get a better life for their family, and how you made the decision to start doing for them, are some of the reasons why today this cause is bigger and continues alive. Hanley, you changed so many lives, not only the children and their families, but also those who have the pleasure to work, volunteer or support this cause, because thanks to you we have got to known how dreams can be possible, no matter what.
There are tons of success stories we could share, even though sometimes it is hard to continue, people inside know they need to do their best. There is no time to wait when your work is a struggle for survival, as all the “guajeros” do every day inside the garbage dump. Many people might think this work is dirty and dangerous, but they really have no idea how it is, and also they have no idea how hard these people work, because even though it is the only chance they have to get some income, the guajeros are the most hardworking, honest, humble and tenacious people on earth. There is so much we can learn from them; they have so little materially, but they can get to be the happiest people while they are unite and taking care of each other, all the family together. Sometimes many of us could get pissed easily for small things.
Sometimes good people need to leave, for one reason that we may not know or accept. We know Hanley, wherever you are, you are still taking care of your children, their families and all those who also make this possible. You are and always be the Angel of the Dump. Thank you for believe in your dream and make all of this possible. As you said, “it is unbelievable how much one can do with so little”. I truly believe we always have the chance to be better people by supporting those in needs, and this way make a better community, a better country, a better world.
Stefan Viehböck en conjunto con el CERT de estados unidos, publicó su trabajo de investigación titulado “Brute forcing Wi-Fi Protected Setup” en el que deja al descubierto un grave fallo de seguridad en el estándar WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup), diseñado para configurar de forma segura los dispositivos inalámbricos, sin que el usuario final tuviera la ardua tarea de memorizar una clave compleja o realizar procedimientos adicionales, el estándar es ampliamente utilizado por empresas como Linksys (Cisco), Belkin, Netgear, D-Link, TP-Link, ZyXEL entre otras y en gran parte de dispositivos viene activa por defecto. Estos últimos días ha aparecido una nueva amenaza en la región. El analista de seguridad José Dos Santos Torrijos ha descubierto una nueva botnet orientada a atacar usuarios mexicanos, la cual está alojada en un sitio gubernamental de México. La amenaza permite a un atacante tomar control de la computadora del usuario, robar información, espiar [...]/p
A continuación se pone a su disposición la presentación “Malware For Linux”, expuesta en la ExploitSec en Noviembre 2011 en Guatemala Ciudad. La Obra está liberada bajo una Licencia Creative Commons Atribución-Compartir-Igual 3.0 Guatemala.
Resulta ser que decidí participar, y como soy un miembro activo, y promotor del Software Libre, se me ocurrió abordar el tema tabu sobre el malware en Linux, pero en el camino encontré temas por demás interesantes y me ví en la necesidad de expandir el tema, teniendo como resultado final “Seguridad (GNU) Linux: malware, vulnerabilidades, protección y otros recursos”. Sin más preámbulo, el documento puede ser descargado aquí.
Gracias a la iniciativa de ESET, el trabajo logró obtener el segundo lugar a nivel latinoamericano, con lo cuál me he hecho acreedor de un viaje para asistir al evento Ekoparty 2011 a llevarse a cabo en Buenos Aires Argentina, así como una sesión especial en las instalaciones de ESET sobre Ingeniería Reversa. Puedo decir que fué una experiencia muy enriquecedora, la cuál me deja muchas cosas nuevas, primero que nada tener una buena actitud, al tipo “nada nos detiene, solo nosotros mismos“, segundo, creo que es muy interesante documentarse e investigar sobre la seguridad de sistemas, ya que el tema sobre virus (malware) en Linux es en ocasiones muy malinformado (especialmente por parte de usuarios) y podemos caer en la sensación de “falsa seguridad“, lo cuál es fatal en entornos de producción.
Y por último el hecho que, como informáticos debemos comprender que en la tecnología hay tanta variedad y libertad de elección tanto en software propietario como Libre que no podemos encuadrarnos en utilizar siempre una herramienta X….ésto lo digo ya que muchos nos encontramos en un punto de decir “en linux no hay virus, no hace falta antivirus“…y cosas soeses por el estilo XD…entonces éste documento es PERFECTO para solventar éstas dudas, y llenarnos de más conocimientos. Y en cuanto a extender el contenido de mi investigación, puedo decirles que encontrarán bastante sobre filtración a sistemas Linux.

People often ask me why I use Linux, and why I just don’t keep using the crap everybody uses (referring to Windows); well, today I found a great explanation why I (and other users) use linux:
We had alternated speaks so people could also attend and learn more about Free Software, Linux, the FS Community and even other speaks more technical as VoIP with Asterisk and FreePBX, Virtualizationl, others. Our LUG is small but special XD. We are a couple of guys. We have Pusher (JorgeMario) who is a good friend from college and was one of the first ones beleiving on the Free Software Phylosohpy (hooly sh$6$…), he is a Hevy Metal lover/player but a very professional person as well. We also have Mauricio, who is another very good friend of mine that I met some years ago at work, and who outsources his own IT Services, this guy is good for so many things but in short could be just infrastructure/networking, configuration and Web Software Apps/DB. Then I can mention Pablo (Guess) who is a crazy guy who likes to compile “Puppxigen Antigua” his own GNU/Linux distribution built in from scratch by himself, based on Puppy Linux; two official releases and he’s working on another one. And other people that I might introduce you in the future, like Walter, Estuardo, Allan, Erick, and others.
We were at a High School building from 9:00 to 3:00 PM installing and providing (CD’s/ISO’s) Ubuntu 11.04, Fedora 14, Open Suse 11.4 and Linux Mint (Ubuntu and Debian based), also some DVD Libre (Free Software for Window$), several basic topic speaks, and the others I just wrote before. We don’t organize many activities during the year, but this one is kind of the one we pretty much worked on. We hope to have more IRC meetings (@freenode #antigualug) and in the best case, some coffe or get togethers (we do like beer!). The LUG’s site is www.antigualug.org and here’s some pics:
El pasado 10 de Diciembre, varios linuxeros de la localidad nos reunimos por última ocasión en éste 2010 para pasar un buen rato, tomar unas cervezas y discutir algunos asuntirijillos de geeks XD.
El grupo se reunión en Café Condesa del parque central de Antigua alrededor de las 7pm, para luego pasar un rato en El Chamman y terminar en París. Una buena noche, y hay mil y un historias que contar, pero es mejor compartir un par de imágenes. (todo ésto, previo a un “No rotundo” en cuanto a la posibilidad de nuestra estadía en un lugar llamado “El Muro”, por no gustarnos su estilo).
